Andrew Sullivan, a civil libertarian!

My friend and classmate, Janet Cohen, has been a reader of Andrew Sullivan for a few years now. I started out by reading a few of his essays, and I appreciated where he was coming from. I now read his blog a couple of times weekly.

Today he posted an article on a bill that, if passed, would allow the "president the right to seize anyone in this country, detain him or her without charges indefinitely and torture them in secret."

Buck Fush! He and his cronies act like he is the king. He is not. He pisses me off. I can't wait until the assclown's reign is over.

Thank you, Andrew, for your focus on all of our rights!

I'm glad Andrew has come around on this whole Bush thing. I find that I agree with a lot of his ideas, but for a while there, he was buying into the lies.

Cheers!

I haven't read through all of Andrew's material since 9/11 to get the whole evolution of his thought, but I'm glad that he has reasoned through to his current stance.

So many people have had changes in their thoughts since 9/11 and the beginning of the Iraq War. The bill of goods Bush sold the nation had appeal to plenty of our citizenry. However, I think the reality of war there and its overall effectiveness (and lack thereof) has made many believers think again.

I have never read much of Andrew's work -- but I have watched Bill Mahr regularly the last few years and he is a regular guest. The last time around, he seemed to be geting pretty disgusted with this administration.

I hope you're right, Joe, that he is not the only one. I had come to that same conclusion before I started this whole traffic exchange/surfing thang... now all I see is increasing polarization and ugliness from BOTH sides. (although, I have to say, coming from a progressive postion, a lot of the right wing stuff seems just a little bit more vile)

Hey tp,

Do you think the polarization was already heated and the traffic exchange just made it more obvious to you?

I've been using the blogmad for the last couple of days. I'm sure we've come across some of the same blogs or at least blogs sharing the same political tone. I tend not to participate in those flaming wars--so counterproductive!!!

Well, thank goodness there's an ignore option there!

ummm... good question, really. I have been getting the feeling over the last six months, or so, that the political winds have finally started to change. Both as regards the polarization between dems and republicans AND in the more important areas of sustainability and RE etc.

But that may be more prevalent amongst moderates, so the polar extremes may have been locked in tight for years, now. I've only been blogging and surfing since August, so I have to assume that what I have seen is NOT new...

I used to read Yahoo message boards a couple of years ago, and they were (and still are) a place for those with vitriolic fingers to gather. I found the barbs kind of funny at first, but as I stayed there too long, I thought it completed pathetic and sad. People wouldn't treat each other like this in person.

I think that is a downside of this technology. It enables those who really want to have constructive debate and conversation (great!). But it also enables those virtual screamers who have seemed to have never learned that civility could actually extend to the cyber-realm, too.
